Ohio Code § 3313.616

Diploma Application

For many students, high school graduation is around the corner. For some veterans, that milestone is something they never had the chance to experience.

Local veterans will have that opportunity thanks to a program out of the Struthers City School System. At no cost, veterans without a high school diploma who served in Korea, Vietnam or World War II can apply to be a part of a spring 2015 commencement ceremony.

The Struthers Fallen Soldier Project and the Struthers School district recognizes the life experiences of honorably discharged veterans who were unable to complete their high school education because of service in the armed forces during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, pursuant to § 3313.616 of the Ohio Revised Code.

The veteran must meet all of the following requirements:

Before graduating from high school, the veteran enlisted in or was drafted into the armed forces of the United States between December 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946 (WWII); between June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955 (Korean conflict); or between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975 (Vietnam era).
At the time of enlistment or draft, the veteran was enrolled in the high school of the district to which this application was made.
The veteran did not subsequently graduate from high school.
The veteran served under honorable conditions during World War II, the Korean conflict, or the Vietnam era.

Most men dropped out high school to serve in the military, some dropped out to help out with the family at home. Women also dropped out of school to help their family when a father or brother went off to war or a mother went to work to support the family. These individuals are also included.

The application form may be completed by the veteran or on his behalf by a spouse, parent, brother, sister, child, or grandchild. If a person who would otherwise qualify for a diploma under this section is deceased, the Struthers Board of Education may award such diploma to the person posthumously and may present that diploma to a living relative of the person.

The application requires:

(1)
a copy of the veteran’s discharge from military service (DD-214) indicating
Honorable service between December 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946 (WWII),
between June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955 (Korean conflict), or
between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975 (Vietnam era).
(2)
copy of the veteran’s school transcripts showing date last attended.

Diploma applications are available at the Struthers Board of Education, AMVETS Post 44, VFW Post 3538 and can be downloaded here.
